A poem about conflicting ideas about reigniting an old flame |
I know you’re writing a song in your head right now Its late afternoon and you’re leaving me soon This ‘holiday romance’ drawing to a close We’re faced with goodbyes and its no real surprise That we’re lying here silently, wondering if our confusion shows Back to the beginning, I thought willpower was winning But whatever this is, it seems stronger than us Your hand holding mine blurs that well trodden line Between friendship and kissing, camaraderie and lust In our private realm of whispers and kisses Secrets are shared and stories are told We impart wisdom and deepest dark wishes Forgetting the time when our feelings were cold We kid ourselves this could be more than just sex When we know we’re just using feelings from before The painful reality is, you are my ex And it’s not good for us to be back here once more I can tell by your silence just what’s on your mind Conflicting emotions, you want this, but don’t Promises of better behaviour, we’ll be friends of some kind We say we’ll behave, still knowing we won’t Our friends feign surprise when they learn of our actions The tangled old saga they’ve all heard before But still we persist, regardless of their reactions Complying as long as the other wants more And I know it won’t stop until someone gets hurt Our circle of friends disrupted once more So baby, please get up and put on your shirt And don’t turn around as you walk out the door |
