on society
We graciously split half a sandwich
and a bowl of soup
at Aunt Piddy Pat’s,
half a mile from Town Square.

We rejoiced in no deaths this year
and drank our raspberry tea,
the sidewalks were clear of litter
and vagabonds running free.

We prided ourselves on heritage,
that wasn’t ours to claim.
We reasoned within our politics,
in a house that cast out blame.

We pretended to hear the applause,
and drank our raspberry tea,
the streets were free of ugliness,
and clean for you and me.

We graciously split half a sandwich
and a bowl of soup
at Aunt Piddy Pat’s,
half a mile from Town Square.
