You Can't Eat the Books in the Library

Jeremy went to the library;
He brought his invisible beast.
Jeremy picked out some cool books;
The beast began having a feast.

"You can't eat the books in the library!",
Jeremy shouted, aghast.
"Books are for reading; they are NOT for eating.
Now put them all back very fast!"

The beast ate a blue 'cyclopedia;
He chomped on a volume called 'Bugs'.
Jeremy jiggled; Jeremy giggled.
The beast gulped another called 'Slugs'.

'You can't eat the books in the library!"
The children's librarian shrieked.
The beast swallowed ten, then he nibbled a pen.
But it didn't taste nice and it leaked.

Jeremy scratched his small head.
"How did YOU see him?" he asked.
"I'm all grown up tall; but once I was small!"
The librarian smiled as she passed.

She snatched back a tasty new novel;
She grabbed the big beast by his ear.
"You can't eat the books in the library,
Sorry to tell you, my dear!"

Jeremy went to the bookshelves;
He found a great volume on snails.
The beast was all grumpy and growly;
He started to whine and to wail.

"You can't make that noise in the library",
The librarian hushed the huge beast.
"It's a place full of learning and quiet;
Not for a monster," she teased.

Jeremy checked out his cool books.
The beast was shown to the door.
"Control your beast better or I'll send home a letter."
The librarian waved; the beast roared.

Jeremy raced out the front door;
The invisible beast slunk behind.
"Let's hurry home with all of these tomes,
And see all the things we can find!"

"You can't eat the books in the library!"
Jeremy scolded the beast.
”I know they look good, so do as you should
And read one before eating, at least!"

The Librarian looked out the window.
She smiled as the two sped away.
"Hurry along, don't do any wrong;
Let's not have another melee!"

The beast followed Jeremy homeward.
He grinned as they ran down the street.
"I can't eat the books IN the library,
But at home they might be a nice treat!"
