A poem about how easy it is to lose sight of ourselves and everything around us
We all feel forgotten,
Unseen by others,
We all are lost,
Unknowing of where to go,
We all feel small,
Unsure of who we are,
Sometimes.

How easy is it to close your eyes,
To forget who we are,
Be like the candle flickering away,
into nothing.

We forget ourselves,
And lose our hope.

We lose our trust,
And are blind to those around us.

Without knowing we strive,
Strive to escape ourselves,
To escape the prison,
The prison that we have made our soul,

Walls that were once home,
Shelter and protection,
Now are walls,
Bitter and high.

Yet sometimes,
Sometimes we climb,
And see around us,
Not freedom,
But only what was there all along,

We see in the walls the door into ourselves,
Unlock the prison that we have made our own self,
See inside of it,
And see that really it is freedom.

The prison,
Once a home,
Never did it truly leave,
Blind to the world we saw only bitterness,
Never did we seek to taste the beauty.

Opening our eyes we see,
See ourselves and all others as they should be,
Full not of hate,
But of compassion,
And of beauty.

Sometimes,
We open our eyes,
And see ourself,
And as the candle that is relit,
While it may not be the same flame,
Still it is the same candle,
And still we are ourselves,
Even after years of seeing only hate.
