A Petrarchan Sonnet
Twenty-nine times your lips curved up that day.
I could hear the sound of my pulse growing.
That late afternoon, your grin was fading.
Then I saw you look back and walk away.

If a star falls tonight, I’d wish you’d stay.
Neglect those times I ignored your falling.
Forget those days you didn’t hear my calling.
I will love you though my skies will turn gray.

Your presence I will consider a blur,
a blank page in the record of my life.
These memories of you I will release.

Planted in mind you spent all night with her,
I’ll take the chance—stab my chest with a knife.
Let the rest of my body rest in peace.
