My Dec. 22 entry for Daily Flash Fiction
“I wouldn’t eat that, if I were you,” a voice said. With a start, I turned around. I was home alone. Where did that voice come from? I didn’t see anyone, and thought it was just my imagination. I turned to pick up the piece of cheese again. I was sick, and it was the only thing that sounded good.

“Seriously, don’t eat that,” I heard. If these were the “dieting” voices in my head, I was not impressed. Cheese was perfectly acceptable. I surveyed the room again. My Lab, Toby, was at my feet. He looked up as if I had something for him. With this terrible cold, I thought the lack of rest was making me delirious. The voice still in my head, confused, I dropped the cheese to Toby who eagerly chomped it down.

“I’m sure you think that’s funny,” I mumbled, through a stuffy nose. “I guess you learned to talk so you could steal my cheese, huh?” I grabbed the box of tissues and shuffled out of the room in my fuzzy slippers and bathrobe.

From the kitchen I heard, “Not really. Just wanted to warn you the cat licked it while you weren’t looking.”
