What happens when a vampire is caught feeding but isn't ready to take the woman's life?
Darkness covered Derrick’s hunt. The moon shined brightly above, giving off only faint light, but he paid no attention to the looming darkness. His eyes needed no adjustment to the dark night. On the contrary, this was when they were at their prime. Carefully he scanned the deserted streets, looking for the victim of his pursuit. Nothing moved as the wind held its breath, waiting. From around the corner a single man entered the solemn moonlit street.

Derrick moved quickly to a crevice between two houses. He buried himself in the darkness there, completely out of sight to even the keenest of eyes. From this hidden area he watched the man, his sharp blue eyes never leaving the figure. The man walked steadily down the street, paying attention to nothing but his own personal ambitions. With a quick, nervous, glance in either direction he removed something from his pocket. Moving in silence the man placed the object against the window of a nearby house and with a pop the window shattered, the glass landing at his feet. Without a moments hesitation he climbed through the window and faded into the darkness of the house.

Derrick had waited, and watched the events unfold from his hidden nook. This was his cue. Without making a sound, he removed himself from his secluded hiding spot. An unlucky passerby would have believed Derrick was floating. His movement was so swift that it seemed as though his feet did not touch the ground. His movement was quick and silent, and within seconds he was standing on the other side of the open window, looking around a homely living room. Derrick paid no attention to his surroundings. He concentrated only on his sense of smell. With a short intake of air he caught the scent of the man’s blood. It was a scent he had memorized while waiting in hiding. Now, using his nose as a guide he followed the scent through to the adjoining hallway. As quickly and silently as he had entered the house, Derrick moved through the hallway at the same pace.

The smell of the man grew stronger as Derrick made his way through the hallway. His pace hastened to a speed that gave him the shape of a blur, as he saw the man carefully walk through the last door in the hallway. In a flash Derrick was outside of that door. His prey was, unknowingly, trapped inside the room. He let his sense of smell relax, the process of finding the prey was over. Now he strained his ears, listening intently for any sign of life in the house. He knew that the residents of the house were there, he had smelled their blood mixed with the blood of his prey. It had smelled deliciously pure, compared to the tainted blood he was seeking. Now he listened to see if any of them remained awake. He could not risk the chance of being heard or found during the crucial moments of his attack. To his relief the house was silent. Only the movement of the man in the next room could be heard. A grim, malicious smile crossed his thin pale lips as he thought of what was to come. With his smile still in place, Derrick gripped the door handle, silently entering the room.

The room was dark, the only light came from
the moonlight that entered through a solitary window. In the far corner of the room Derrick found the man he had pursued rummaging through the drawers of an antique looking desk. The scent of the man filled the room. To Derrick the alcohol and drug tainted blood smelled like a feast, as hungry as he was. The smell nearly threw Derrick into a rampage, but he held his ground. He waited for the man to turn around, chuckling as his prey let out a small cry of shock once he realized he was no longer alone in the room. Derrick stood at the door, examining his prey when the man spoke.

         “I....I can explain Sir.”

The man could hardly speak the words because of his nervousness and shock. Derrick could hear his heart speed up with fear. He could almost see the blood pump faster through his veins. He obviously believed that Derrick was one of the owners of the house, and would try to explain his reason for being there. Derrick could not contain a laugh at the absurdity of the situation. His laugh was harsh, and sent chills up the man’s spine.

“Shut up you imbecile. Come here.”

Derrick’s deep voice was firm and gave off a sense of commandment. It left a person in fear of what might happen to them if they did not follow the directions he had given. Derrick saved this voice for the prey he desired to keep quiet. He would leave his victims in enough fear that they were left speechless. The man moved towards Derrick, stumbling in his fear. Once he was close enough for Derrick to be able to keep his voice at a whisper, Derrick spoke once more in the same tone of voice, only lowered.

         “Are you prepared to die?”

The blunt question threw the man off. He looked to Derrick, panic on his face. Derrick’s cold eyes bore into the man’s fear covered ones. The hard blue eyes threw the man into a panic. Fearing for his life he stumbled backwards, colliding with a small table containing a lamp. With a loud crash both the man and the lamp fell to the floor. Suddenly the smell of blood burst through the air. The man had sliced his arm on the shattered shards of the lamp at the end of his fall. The blood oozed from the wound filling the air with it’s scent.

The smell was more than Derrick could bare. With a surge of hunger filling his body, he crouched down, his eyes ablaze with fire. With a growl that seemed to come from the depths of his stomach, Derrick lunged to the man. He placed two strong hands around the man’s warm skin. Derrick’s teeth penetrated the man’s skin before he could release a scream. The blood tasted so good, quenching the thirst that poured through Derrick’s body. He continued to drink hungrily until a piercing scream disturbed his feasting.

In shock Derrick released his hold on the man, letting his lifeless body fall to the floor. Derrick’s eyes darted towards the sound of the scream and laid upon a young woman. She looked no older than 19, her hair spread across her pale face. She stared at Derrick, her eyes wide with fear. Her pink lips remained in the shape left by her scream, although she was now silent. Derrick watched her for a moment, at a loss for what to do. The silent gaze between the two seemed to last an eternity. Suddenly, realizing that she was too petrified to move and that his dinner was slowly spilling across the hardwood floor, Derrick leaned down and continued his meal on the man.

The girl remained in the doorway, silently watching. Derrick could feel her gaze upon him, making his hard earned feast less enjoyable. Once he had drank his fill he stood straight once more. Gingerly, he wiped a trickle of blood from the corner of his lips as he turned to the girl frowning, She trembled under his gaze. His eyes burned ice blue, as they always did after a feeding and they stood out against his pale skin. He could not take his eyes off of her as he pondered over his next move should be.

He could kill her. Derrick would love to drink her pure, sweet blood. It would be a pleasure to sink his fangs into her soft innocent skin. He had spent the better part of his years feasting on the foul blood of criminals and this would be like a holiday feast. Her smell was tantalizing, toying with his mind. His instinct told him to attack, to sink his teeth into her delicious neck and do the deed. He would have done exactly as his mind desired had it not been for the satisfied fullness settling in his stomach. He knew it would be a waste to take the life and spill the blood of such a fine creature when he would not be able to fully enjoy it. With his satisfied hunger he would never be able to finish her off. She would be left dead but half of her blood would still be intact. No, Derrick could not waste the blood. He could not turn to killing an innocent after years of abstance only to leave the job half completed.

Derrick pondered over what to do with her. He could not let her return to life as she knew it. She would expose his secret to the humans, causing more trouble than he dared to think about. Still, he had to act quickly. Her scream was bound to have awoken the other members of the house and they would be coming to find the source of the disturbance. Coming to a hasty, and probably unwise decision, Derrick moved towards the girl with his unnatural speed. The sound of her meager voice did nothing to slow his pace.

         “What are you?”

         “I am a mythological creature....a creature of your nightmares....I am a vampire.”

He said this as he moved directly in front of her. Derrick’s voice was steady as his movements. The girl looked at him in horror as his hand reached out to grasp her neck. The feel of her neck was slender and warm beneath his. It once again brought forth his instincts, the desire to bite her then and there. It took all of his will power and more to contain his desire for her.  Placing two strong, cold fingers along the proper places in the back of her neck he applied a small amount of pressure.

Derrick’s reflexes were unnaturally quick as he caught her in mid-fall. With ease he scooped the unconscious girl into his arms. Hearing the sound of distant footsteps he knew the other residents of the house were on their way to the room. Derrick glided towards the window, pushing it open with his one free hand. Without a look behind him he jumped from the window ledge. An onlooker would think the mysterious figure carrying a girl had disappeared into the night in the middle of his jump. Derrick had in fact never hit the ground. His shirt tore easily along his back as he unleashed his massive wings. He was one of the few vampires who was granted the gift of wings. Usually concealed beneath his shirt, they made for an easy get away. Holding securely onto the girl he flew high into the night sky, using the clouds as cover from curious onlookers. It wasn’t until he was above the misty clouds and out of sight that he was able to relax momentarily.

Derrick glanced down at the girl he held in his arms. He was amazed at her simple beauty. Her eyes were closed, letting her gentle lashes rest along her soft skin. Without the rush of fear her skin held a faint tan that contrasted beautifully with her reddish-blonde wavy hair. Her long hair took flight against the wind, blowing along her face and his chest. She was warm in Derrick’s arms, sending a surge of heat through his cold skin. Her entire being fascinated Derrick. He had been isolated from human beings for so long that this poor unlucky girl was a identical to a new toy. But he refused to be tempted by the curiosity he felt. She was merely a meal to be stored for another time. She was not a person, not a creature to whom he could grow attached. With fierce determination he drew his eyes away from her, focusing on his flight.
