Family Christmas Poem

Twas a while before Christmas, and here in our house,
It was a time of reflection for me and my spouse;
With memories of the year still fresh in our minds,
We thought to write them down before losing them to time;

The year has been a good one for us, the kids and all,
We even had a chance to enjoy the fall;
This summer was nice, but busy with trips,
Most to Massachusetts for parties with chips;

Nola is continuing her Masters education,
Though statistics sometimes gives her a befuddled sensation;
She remains at Wescott Junior High, twelve years now,
Encouraging her kids and showing them how,
Math can take them oh so many places,
And may one day even put smiles on their faces;

Megan did graduate from Assumption this year,
And is at UMO getting her Masters without fear;
A real life “college experience” she has set in her mind,
Walking the path of mathematics is her daily grind;
She’s sharing an apartment with her cousin Charlee,
While studying hard to understand Topology;

Becca is at SMCC learning automotive repair,
By taking them apart with diligence and care;
Getting them back together and in their original charm,
Takes patience, knowledge and the occasional strong arm;
Fixing large trucks and tractors is her ultimate goal,
She’s working hard to make her place in a mostly male role;

Rick is still at the fire department doing his time,
Though retirement eligibility is looking pretty fine;
Two more years of work isn’t that long,
Maybe five to pay the house off, if I’m not wrong;
While hunkered down to hibernate for the winter,
He dreams of warm days and long hikes with nary a blister;

This summer saw solar panels installed on our roof,
To make our water hot, this is no spoof;
A reduction in oil use is what we seek,
And to make our carbon footprint small and weak;

As we honor the holidays and the close of ’08,
Our family hopes your family will safely celebrate;
And in the words of a Jolly Old Elf of little height,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
