what used to be isn't
This poem is not held to any standard of meter or rhyme, but is meant to be read slow, pausing slightly after each line, which I think gives in a sense of rhythm, like a slow funeral dirge. Maybe it doesn't, but I think the words have something deep to say about friendship and the ties that bind us together.

"Amy"

Things were so simple then
Sitting under the trees
With our lunches, content
Just to be all together

But now I see skewed lines
And a picture ripped in several places
Where was once blue sky
Lays a jagged edge

We changed I suppose
And I guess I should have seen it coming
The differences in us all were too great
Though latent, without words
Just glances of disapproval

Then another boy came around
And one of us was gone
As lightning flashes in a storm
Joyous and bright
But leaving a burnt scar.

Then two of us got together
And there were whispers
And more unhappy glances
There weren't as many pictures
Things were becoming fractured.

And those whispers became shouts
Of higher morality
And who was right about things
And now no one knows anything
We only share passing smiles.

Now two of us smoke
And talk about the old times
Under trees in quiet breezes
With our lunches
And things were so simple

Or maybe I was just naive.
