Remembering

The old stone wall has crumbled now,
The pathway's overgrown,
The loveseat where we pledged our vow
Now stands there all forlorn.

The children's swing has turned to rust.
It once was painted red.
The garden now is naught but dust
The blossoms are all dead.

But still I hear the joyful sound
Echoing o’er the years,
Of happy children running round.
Such laughter, fun and tears.

The time goes by, the children grow,
They quickly fly the nest.
You miss them, but they have to go.
Their wings they have to test.

They will return time and again.
And joy will fill your heart.
Just like the sunshine dries up rain,
The teardrops will depart.

Those budding years of happiness
Are all too quickly past.
My greatest fear, I must confess,
‘My memories won’t last’.

Now, in the autumn of my days
I sit and bide a while.
Back o’er the past I fondly gaze,
Remember, and I smile.
