An inventive poem about Hurricane Katrina
A Moment’s Reality within Mirrored Flashes of Time…

Oh God, the horror –
God, the fright;
My God! What has occurred tonight?
I’ve been around
‘most fifty years –
my life is now beset with fears…

My dearest wife –
it’s time to go;
with pomp and circumstance let’s show
the world that we’re
indeed – The Best!
My dearest wife, oh how we’re blessed…

My God! The sounds
of breaking glass;
of blowing wind – the smell of gas.
It’s come in close.
How can this be?
It’s come in like an angry sea…

A phone call, Dear –
do pardon, please –
I shall return when I appease
the person who
disturbs my time –
‘please see my drink has extra lime’…

My God! I am
so all alone!
It’s getting hard to hold my own.
And this ‘ol house
can’t be replaced!
My God! The water’s to my waist!

Well, Dear, there is
no need to leave
for problems that I do believe
will be addressed
by local folk –
my Aides advise me not to choke…

My God! I’m trapped
here – two long days.
Can’t quench my thirst – I’m in a haze!
Where is the help?
Where is the aid?
My God I’m hungry! How I’ve prayed…

My Dear, it seems
it’s worse than thought.
It seems that folks are most distraught.
I guess I’ll send
a few more troops
to settle down these moral groups…

My God! I’m saved!
My house is lost –
and furthermore I’ve now been tossed
into a dome
where mis’ry lies;
with such conditions I despise…

My Dear, let’s stop
and have some lunch;
well, actually let’s have some brunch.
The breakfast hours
passed right by;
and I’m so hungry I could die…

With still no food
and still no drink,
My God! I’m driven to the brink!
As peoples tempers
run amuck –
as politicians pass the buck…

My goodness, Dear
they dare blame me
for waiting all this time to see
that help was needed
days ago.
They say that I’ve been far too slow…

My God! So many
horrors loom
within this space so full of gloom.
There’re rapes and shootings,
bathrooms flood
as tempers flair in fits of blood…

My dear, we must go
down and quell
the ones who say I don’t excel
at making choices
for our states –
they say that they’re in desperate straights…

My God! My life
has been destroyed!
I have no house, I’m unemployed!
I’m one of thousands
losing all;
with nothing left – I fear I’ll fall….

My Dear, let’s show
them that we care.
We’ll share some hugs, and say a prayer.
We’ll tell them that
we’ll right what's wrong –
assure them how they’ll
come out strong…

My God! How will
I find my place
within my country I embrace?
Who’s gonna give
me what I had?
A house… a job… a launching pad…

My Dear, it’s time
to head on home.
I’ve made my speeches to postpone
the thinking shared
by races, shunned –
this backlash leaves me rather stunned…

As thousands beg
a helping hand;
My God! We look to our command
to show support –
to share our grief;
to bring our families some relief…

My dearest wife –
it’s time we go;
with pomp and circumstance let’s show
the world that we’re
indeed – The Best!
My dearest wife, oh how we’re blessed…
