Written in the days after hurricane Katrina to help me cope.
Up and down, up and down, floating with the waves.
Eyes wide open staring up at the beautiful summer day.
The brightest sun is shining down with no clouds in the sky.
His open eyes take this in as he keeps on floating by.
The sloshing of the water and the rustle of the tide
Are the only sounds to be heard, as up and down he glides.
Gentle hands now reaching out, lifting him with care.
Set him down, gently now, though he's unaware.
Now he lies inside the bag, still staring at the sky.
She feels a tear roll down her cheek. He was much too young to die.
Of all the kids she's pulled out, he's the youngest one so far.
She keeps praying that she'll soon wake up and escape from all this horror.
Just as all her hope has fled, leaving her alone,
Something happens to her from the realm of the unknown.
There are ghostly fingers on her face, as gentle as the wind.
They seem to say, “See, I'm okay. I'm back among my friends.”
