the man in the tower
The Bell Tower
In the tower of a church
Lived a poor and simple man
He was a young and lonely man
He had no home or land
He sang alone and rung his bell
In the tower of the square
A Giant polished bell
That had a noise so rare
When hour struck each night and day
and the bell would chime it's brass away
but the townsmen cursed this steeple tower
as the children in the square would play
they thought it far to loud ringing with it's power
But the man continued ringing
as He sat alone each day
He could hear the joyous singing
and the laughing people gay
In a town that wouldn't care
The man grew old alone
ringing to the air each hour
Filling streets and homes
The people went on happy,
Merry every hour
Forgetting all about the man
Alone inside the tower
And then one day the bells they stopped
Chiming with their power
There echoed not a sound
From the tall secluded tower
The townsmen called "wake up "
It's time to ring the bell
we are so very sorry
but you ring it quite so well
But the old bell man had passed
In the cold and frigid night
There was no home for him
With heat or even light
The cold and lonely tower
Was the only place he lived
Waiting on the bell
was all he ever did
Death had crept into the tower
From the hearts of men so cold
And froze the mighty bell
So it's sound could never hold
They found an empty plot
behind the tower church
And laid his flesh to rot
In a hole beneath the earth
The tower was closed For none to hear
The brass of bell and ring
And then the sickness full of fear
Brought the wrath of death and sting
The town would slowly die that year
of plague and fear and sin
Weeping for a joyous ring
They would never hear again
