Is This our Decision to Make?

Have you ever seen the unbridled joy in a mother’s eyes when she holds her new baby for the first time? I have. I have also seen her excitement when that baby takes its first steps, or says its first word. These are experiences that the mother wouldn’t have had the baby been aborted. I know abortion is a controversial and touchy subject, but I have never actually gotten involved in the argument.
I should start by stating that I am truly biased in this argument and it is very difficult for me to consider the opposition as legitimate arguments. I have known since an early age that babies and young children are my passion. Their unconditional love and compassion amazes me. I cannot wait to be a mother and raise my own children. To add to my bias, I also work at a daycare and can’t imagine my day without those children.
One question people bring up regarding abortion is when life starts. One legitimate answer to this is at conception. If not then, then what is the embryo before it is considered alive? It certainly isn’t dead; it’s a growing living human. The dictionary tells us that an embryo is a developing human from the time of implantation to eight weeks later. The fact that it is a human brings up the point that abortion is murder. Webster’s dictionary defines murder: the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought. Abortion fulfills two parts of this definition. First it is the unlawful killing of a human being, and second it is done with aforethought. I realize malice is irrelevant here so it doesn’t apply in that aspect, but two out of three isn’t bad. Whether you believe it is murder will change you opinion drastically. I could paint a picture of an innocent fetus curled up in its mom’s tummy being sucked out by a vacuum but I’m not going to do that. All I am going to say abortion is unnatural.
There is an infinite number of reasons in which abortion seems like the only option. The operative word here is “seems”. There are always options for a pregnant woman. The obvious one to me is to have the baby and raise it. If that is impossible then there is always adoption. If the woman is pregnant as a result of rape then I can see her not wanting to keep that baby. It would be a daily reminder of what happened, this would cause the mother to resent her child. If there is no chance for the child to have a loving and nurturing environment then it needs to be put somewhere else, termination is not the only option. There are too many couples in this world that want a baby and have the means to raise it in a loving home but are unable to have a baby of their own. Give them a chance to raise your unwanted child. I’m sure this is a better alternative than throwing the being inside you away.
I am going to bring up another touchy subject, God. One of the main reasons I am against abortion is my religious beliefs. I believe that God planned each one of us and when we abort a pregnancy we throw one of his creations away. How do we know that the baby that was aborted wouldn’t have cured cancer or solved world hunger? My point is we don’t know. We not only deprive this child of life but we deprive the world of the person they would have become. What I am trying to say is we can’t play God and when we decide who lives and who dies that is what we are trying to do.
I know that many of you have points to make about how wrong I am, and that’s fine. You hold your own papers in your hands and can reveal your opinions as well. These are simply my feelings, nothing else. Abortion is a question of morality and we each have our own set of morals. I don’t expect mine to change your minds, and I realize that one essay won’t solve the issue, but I’ve said what I needed to. Abortion shouldn’t only be a political issue, although it seems like it is. Take it out of politics so something can be done about it. When we have our own children someday we will better enjoy the simplicity in their smile, the dependency they have on us. Until then we go by only our morals (rather than experience), but no child should be deprived of its chance to shine.
