It's about my personal experiences in friendship.
You must have read stories about friends who can do anything for each other, who stand by each other in the most difficult times. They are rather touching, aren't they? But ask yourself, when was the last time you read a story about two schoolgirls being best friends? Actually, it's quite possible that you have never come across such a story. Because in reality, such a situation is very rare.
There are certain places, certain ages and certain conditions in which two girls can be the best of friends. But at my age, in this place where I live, you won't find a single girl who feels safe to confide her innermost feelings in another girl. I myself can't.
The reason? Jealousy, envy, vengefulness. Often the complications arise because of a boy. Now, imagine yourself in this situation. Say, your best (girl) friend has liked this guy for a long time. He is a mutual friend, and a really fun person to be with. Your friend eats your head off the whole day by telling you how hot he is.
The trouble begins when you realize that she is right. He does have the most charming smile you’ve ever seen. And he does have the cutest dimples. And he does have the warmest eyes you could ever have imagined. And he…well, you get the drift. Okay, so you start spending time with this guy, and she gets jealous.
“You’re trying to steal him from me?” she says. How are you supposed to explain that you two are just good friends? Then she starts accusing you of being two-faced, of trying to trap him. This is not true, you tell her, but she won’t listen. Meanwhile, that sweet guy, who is a really close friend of yours by now, confesses to you that he considers her ‘just a friend’. Cool. But how do you tell her that? By this time, you like him as much as your friend does, and surprisingly, even he likes you, so you two hook up. Now your best friend becomes your worst enemy. She goes around telling everyone how you cheated her, she bitches about you endlessly.
Another scenario is when you accidentally spill one of her secrets which nobody except you is supposed to know. She thinks you did it on purpose, so she goes out and tells everybody about your secret crush, or that embarrassing situation you had gotten yourself into. Tit for tat.
Now, would you ever face such a situation if your best friend was a boy? A boy who listens to all your problems, lends you his shoulder to cry on, even takes the blame for a mistake you had made. Would a girl ever do that? The answer is no.
So, take my advice, and find a boy who is so understanding that you will wonder why you ever confided in your girlfriends. I found him. Good luck to you too.
