So said Jesus: Don’t covet what’s your friend’s,
Nor cast a vile eye on your neighbour’s wife.
He bid man to shun all stealthy errands,
And not to depose false when there is strife.
O Lord, your commandments, I know by heart,
Yet each of them I have broken so far.
In your service I never played my part,
In worship of Satan I knew no bar.
I wasted life’s long years that you gave.
My flesh and spirit are both of them weak.
How can I, from hell, ever myself save?
I can, humbly, my Lord, only thus speak:
“O Lord, you alone can make this happen;
You can still send this sinner to heaven”.
