This is part of a book I'm writing, The Omega Experiment.
I grasped Alpha’s hand in mine, more to comfort myself than him.
“Omega…” he wheezed, “Where…have you…been…all this time?” I forced a reassuring smile to my face.
“I’ve been out to see the world, Alpha. It’s amazing.” I squeezed his hand. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner.”
“S’okay…” he said, his voice straining, “It’s…nice to…see you…again.” He tried to smile, but it came out as a grimace of pain. “Maybe…once thing’s…settle…you can…tell me about…everything…”
I brushed some hair away from his sweat-soaked face, fighting back the tears that I could feel prickling at the back of my eyes. Neither of us spoke for a moment, the only sound in the room being Alpha’s wheezing breaths. I didn’t want this moment to end, because I knew when it did…
“Hey…Omega?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you…remember…that letter you…sent me…?”
“Mmhmm…” I held his hand to my cheek. It was getting colder and that scared me to no end.
“Remember about…religion?” His sentences were becoming more butchered and harried than they had been a few minutes ago.
“Humans…go to…Heaven…right…?” I nodded.
“If they’re good.”
He took a deep, shuddering breath. “Where do…we…go?”
I knew that by “we” he meant the Experiments. I had to wonder that myself. Where did we go after we died? From everything I had heard, we were a sin against nature. And people who sinned went to Hell. But…the fact that we were created by others meant that it wasn’t our fault. So were we exceptions? From what I heard, animals didn’t have any souls and didn’t go to Heaven either. What were we? Not evil enough to go to Hell, but not good enough to go to Heaven. Where were we destined to go?
“Omega…” I was pulled back into reality by Alpha’s uttering of my name and the way he was squeezing my hand. “Chest feels…tight…Omega?”
I felt a few tears run down my cheeks. “That’s called fear, Alpha.” I took a deep breath, trying to maintain control. “It’s an emotion.”
“Emotion?” Alpha smiled dazedly, his eyes cloudy, all traces of pain gone from his face. “I’ve always wanted…to feel…one of…those…” He let out a long breath and the tight grip on my hand went slack. Just one glance at his eyes told me he was gone.
The tears were flowing freely now as I leaned down and kissed his forehead. “May you find peace,” I whispered, “Wherever you end up.” I closed the eyelids of my best friend and stood up, leaving his body on the floor. I wiped the tears away from my eyes, even as they kept coming. It was hard to believe he was gone, after all this time. I guess I had always believed that through all of this, Alpha would make it out okay. But I guess I was wrong.
I tensed up as I felt a hand on my shoulder. Only the extreme grief kept me from completely laying out whoever was on the other end of that arm. It’s a good thing, too. A few seconds later, Evan stepped into my line of vision.
“Are you going to be okay?” He said quietly, looking me straight in the eyes. I nodded.
“I’ll be fine. Let’s go.” We both walked down the corridor that led to the main control room. When we reached the trapdoor, I took a deep breath. It was now or never. It wasn’t the time to be sad over Alpha’s death. Soon, I would avenge him. So, with a steely heart, I climbed up and pushed it open, never looking back.
