Imagist poetry, my Mum's favorite of all my poems.
Summer Thoughts
Licking the sweet thin
drops of melting ice and sugar,
we stood.
On a dusty corner sidewalk,
in the searing black kettle heat.
We wore faded blue jeans,
recycled into faded fraying shorts.
And shirts without sleeves.
The sweat on our panting upper lips
was twinned by the slow perspiration of
the artificial icicles in our clenched and grimy fists.
The sun glared
angry at our peaceful apathy,
and burnt our faces in righteous punishment.
As we stood,
our rubber soled shoes faintly melting
on the baked concrete,
dirty windowed cars flashed by
like feral tin fish
swimming in waves of heat.
