[About the Indian festival of Rakhee, celebrated as the Sister’s Day
SISTER'S DAY

East is East and West is West,
This fact we cannot contest.

Concepts and thoughts of the East,
The West can’t think in the least.

Let us talk of festivals;
They bring peace in upheavals.

They are truly a beacon
To cultural tradition.

Rakhee or Raksha Bandhan
Is meant for each, everyone.

What deepest love a sister
Displays towards her brother!

To her brother does she tread
And on his wrist ties a thread.

He gives word that, as brother,
He would love and protect her.

This is Indian culture.
The West can’t it decipher.

• Raksha-bandhan or Rakhi is an important festival of Hindus. It may be called as “Sister’s day”. On this day, the sister ties a sacred thread around the right wrist of the brother, or an acquaintance whom she wants to treat as brother. The thread is a token of the pure brother-sister relation which implies, in addition, a duty on the part of the brother to help and protect the sister when necessary.
