The gulf between the haves and the have nots
FANCY DRESS PARTY: a sonnet

The fancy dress show goes on in full swing,
The quetzal hat, the peacock dress, the pearls.
All wish that they a real surprise spring.
A colourful display, in fact, unfurls.

The dance and light and music captivate,
Champagne and Chivas Regal flowing free.
When bodies mingle, they don’t hesitate,
In every nook and corner there’s much spree.

I wish you very happy day indeed
On having sweet sixteen age now attained.
But verily my heart today does bleed.
What have you, by such royal spending, gained?

In hunger half the children their life spend.
How can this party I enjoy my friend?
