Prolouge to novella I am currently writing.
The night was warm and wet but, we were all wracked by chills. Delicious chills dancing up and down our spines, though no one would have admitted to it. What we were doing was crazy, sneaking up to the old Mooney House in the dark. But, here we were scared out of our minds and urging everyone else to go first.
All of our lives we had been warned away from this grand old mansion, beautiful by day and haunted by night. Earlier, when the dare to come had been issued, we had thought this would be a grand adventure. Now, we were't so sure. The fog was slowly crawling across the ground, swirling around our ankles and swallowing the sounds of the night. Slowly, we inched forward with our parents warnings echoing through our minds.
" Strange things happen there. Never go there day or night!" My mother's voice.

"I don't believe in ghosts but terrible accidents happen all the time." My father.

"It's just a stupid old house! C'mon, guys." Jamie hissed at us. He was the only boy in our group and the undisputed leader. Slowly we began to tiptoe across the lawn, focused on the little out building that must have been a gardner's shed at one time. All we had to do was open the door and bring something from inside. Something to prove we had been here.
We were less than two feet away when the hair on my neck began to rise and we heard a deep booming rattle to the left. Thunder, it sounded like. Frozen, I turned my head to look at the house and gasped. The windows were shaking and the fog had taken on an odd glow. Too quickly we could see nothing but the lurid blue of the wet, wet fog and I only knew where the others were because we standing so close I could feel the shivers coursing through bodies.
The sound grew so loud my ears began to ring and I could think of absoulutely nothing but run, run, run! I shouldn't have left them, my friends, but I was running. The brush scraped againt my bare legs and slapped my face until I was bleeding .But, I ran until I could n't hear anything but my own ragged breathing.
Disoriented, I wandered until the dark swallowed me, just as it had all my friends, I was sure. And, there in the dark it was quiet and warm and safe. The dark would protect me and protect me it did. I didn't wake warm in my bed for almost two years with no memory of what had happened or why Jamie was gone. But, I did wake up sometimes, with the sound of thunder echoing in my dreams and a scream upon my lips. I wouldn't remember anything more about that night for ten more years. I didn't remember until he came, the dead boy who had been my first love
