A quick journey through my adult life
A change of direction

A change of direction is on the cards
For my wife and I, fifteen years.
Great news, and not unexpected,
Which almost reduced me to tears.

We have a little baby on the way,
The fruit of our true love.
And I can't wait for that brilliant day,
To hold him high above.

It wasn't always like this, you know,
I never wanted a child.
I always wanted fun and adventure,
Anything that was wild.

I always thought that was my choice,
That I decided my fate.
But now I realise I was just selfish,
And all my wife could do was wait.

She was always there beside me,
Through good times and bad.
Never whinging, never whining,
Never showing that she was sad.

We've been north and we've been south,
Everywhere we went was fun.
We even went to Paris, France
where it was freezing in the sun.

You could say we grew up together,
For when we met we were just kids.
We knew from the start we loved each other,
Even when we didn't, we did.

We've met good people and we've met bad,
From all of whom we have learnt.
The good ones are still around today,
The bad ones just left us burnt.

It would seem we've done all there is to do,
That we've reached the limit of our fun.
But with this change of direction in our midst,
The games have just begun.

It's a nice change of direction, this,
Of which we have had many.
But this will be the most rewarding
Because children... we don't have any.

Yes, we are all grown up now,
And I am selfish no more.
For my wife has always wanted a child,
My dear Shirley, whom I adore.

A change of direction is on the cards.
A fork in the road, a different life.
Only now there will be three in the story.
Myself, my child and my wife.
