Awarded 2nd Place - "Strength of Words" Contest, Round 1 |
'Tis the season to be baking. Soon my stomach will be aching. Eating fruitcake, pumpkin pie; Shortly I'll be groaning, "Why . . . ?" Lighting rooms with flaming tapers, Wrapping gifts in fancy papers. Greeting friends who come to call. Thanks for birth in humble stall. Sending cards that tell of year's news. Curling up to take a long snooze. Up real late to greet New Year; Resolutions and good cheer. I hate taking down that ol' tree -- One job always left to just me. Husband gets to haul the box. Goodbye tree! I dream of Phlox. The time has come to organize, To hide the clutter from all eyes. We, by friends, with gifts were graced. Must make plans so naught's misplaced. Watching football on the TV, Some yell, "Sit down! I canNOT see!" Cheering Colts to Super Bowl; See them play with heart and soul. Fam'ly fun while working puzzle. Underneath afghan we nuzzle. Treasure found within a book. What I write deserves a look! I am whiney 'cause it's darker; Wish for Spring and walks with Parker. Organizing scraps in books, Giving photos second looks. I curse the scales and slap my head -- "Gosh and golly, I am well fed!" Digging out my hidden stash, fav'rite cookies go in trash. The gym I call to "re-enlist." "I'll start tomorrow," I insist. Look in mirror, see my thigh And bemoan that Spring is nigh. I flip the page of catalog And order seeds tho' garden's bog. Mail my order in good time; Dream of thawing earth and grime. Bathe the dog and add bandana. He thinks he's the top banana. Feed the cat and water, too -- Things my daughter said she'd do. New sump pump installed by husband. I'm impressed and give him big hand! Though he makes a horrid mess, Dollars saved do me impress. Watch the news and watch the weather; Glad to have a coat of leather. Had enough of winter chill; Warmth and sunshine fit the bill. Peer through glass of icy window, List'ning to the winter wind blow. This drear time will "fine-ly" end. Gladly Spring is 'round the bend! written by caf on 01/22/03 syllabic pattern: 8-8-7-7 |
