I tried to write a poem for kids and my 11yo daughter loves it, so I may have succeeded.
There's a creature that lives behind our washing machine
I've seen its head poking out and it looks rather mean

I don't like to go in the laundry alone
Cause I've heard it let out its terrible groan

If I have to go in and I do make the trek
I can feel the hairs stand on the back of my neck

As I walk past the door, I can feel its stare
and I'm sure it can hear me from inside its lair

But now the time's come, I must go in again
and my heart's beating faster than a runaway train

I look round the door but I can't hear a thing
So I think of a happy song that I can sing

I tip-toe across looking every which way
but I can't seem to glimpse it at all today

I put my clothes in the washer and step round the back
and brace myself for the coming attack

as I gasp at the creature it's not all that fussed
cause it's just an old soft toy, all covered in dust
