Brian has a not-so-easy decision to make...
“Come on, Brian, it’s not that big a deal,” I could hear them saying. The boy, Brian they called him, had a queasy, nervous look about him.
“I dunno guys…I mean…It’s just…” Brian stopped mid-sentence. They pulled me out of the box and waved me in front of his face. If they had to drink me, then they should just get it over with! Like the other guy said, “It’s not that big a deal.”
“Come on Brian!” They all chimed in. One of the other guys took a swig, made a loud gulp, and tried to make it look like he actually liked the stuff. I knew he didn’t though. The look of repulsion when the guys looked away told me everything. These guys were losers. I could tell, especially Brian. I mean, he couldn’t even try and fit in with losers—how pathetic.
“I had my cousin go out and buy these special for tonight. I had to pay extra for him to even do it, too! You better drink some,” I heard the guy who held me mutter irritably in his ear. If he couldn’t enjoy me, then why waste me?
“Ryan, I still dunno…I mean…” and then mumbled something about like “I’m not thirsty.”
“Ryan, toss me another one!” called one of the other guys. Now why couldn’t he drink me? He knew how to have a good time; he’d already been through one bottle.
“Fine, I give up…You really need to lighten up.” Ryan set me down and walked over to the other guys. A few girls had joined them now. Oh, why didn’t he bring me! I glared at Brian; well, as well as something without eyes can glare. If he could just get over his “good boy” self long enough, he’d have some fun. If he couldn’t bend the rules just a little in his favor, he just shouldn’t be there. I wanted to scream “Drink me and hang out with your friends!” but, I being a bottle, didn’t have a mouth.
Soon, one of the girls walked by, and I practically begged for her to pick me up and drink me, but she didn’t see me and picked up one of the other bottles out of the case.
“Some party huh? Brian, why are you by yourself?” Someone had sewn his tongue to the roof of his mouth as he froze when he realized she was talking to him.
“Uhh…I, I was just coming over here for s-some chips,” he replied and pulled a handful of potato chips from the bowl and stuffed them in his mouth.
“Oh, come and find me when you’re done eating, ’kay.”
“Sthure!” The kid tried to squeak a word of response with his mouthful of potato chips spraying out everywhere.
Then Ryan came back with an empty bottle. “Oh please pick me up, please, please, please!” I begged. I hated seeing everyone else have fun.
“Dude, why didn’t you talk more to Lynne? She tried to start a conversation with you and you ignored her. Here,” he picked me up and handed me to Brian. “This will loosen you up,” Brian gave Ryan a questionable look. “Lynne’s waiting for you…” Brian couldn’t be convinced. Ryan, who seemed to have just given up, put me down again and walked away.
After a little while, Lynne walked over again. This time she was all giggly and grabbed another bottle.
“Here Brian,” she picked me up, but now I didn’t even have any hopes. I wouldn’t have noticed I even left the table if I hadn’t looked down. Sitting in a dark refrigerator sounds better than this. “Come join the party! You can’t hog the potato chips all night,” she laughed for no reason. Brian looked from me to her, then back to me, and then her. He took me from her hand. How could this be happening? Joy sloshed within me. He took the cap off and took a swig.
Finally the party started! Just as soon as hope filled me to the brim, it spilled out of me. Brian spit his mouthful all over Lynne. His eyes got really big and he dropped me.
“Sorry!” I heard him say while grabbing the napkins at the table and running to the sink to get them wet. “Sorry…” He mumbled and wouldn’t look at her. She just gave him a look of disgust, and I watched Brian run out of the house. What an idiot!
