A poem to my father, whose addiction I cannot understand.
Dad,

Why did you do it?
Why did you?

You lit up that pipe,
Knowing it would only cause pain.

You lit up that pipe,
When you had the power to say, "No."

You lit up that pipe,
Only to feel good for a moment.

You lit up that pipe,
Realizing it would change your life.

Dad,
Why did you do it?

Now you have a problem, again.
Now you have more pain.

You almost lost your family, again.
You almost lost your life.

You lit up that pipe,
Understanding every outcome.

So your daughter asks just this,

"Dad, why did you do it?
Why did you..do it again?"
