I see this (hopefully) happening in the not too distant future...
As you grew,
so did the distance between us.
Your room,
my shrine to your childhood,
still remains
as you left it.
Pictures,
you at the prom,
your first car,
your wedding,
dance across the walls.

Above your bed,
high-school pom-poms
cheer my nostalgia.
On your dresser,
a trophy
exalts your victory
middle-school volleyball.
On the bookshelf,
elementary mathematics
contains fractions
of my heart.
On your nightstand,
your diary,
sworn to secrecy,
lies open.

As I pick it up
something falls.
A kindergarten drawing
you and me
smiling.
And at the bottom,
scribbled in bright red letters

I Love You Mommy

I put down the picture,
and pick up the phone.
