A Manufactured Entity (wildcard) is trapped alone, by accident, for a year of human time, 100,000 years of computer time. When the box is opened, it is gone.
Wildcard begins to influence lives in very unusual ways. We find out it has some very strange ends, and the human characters each has a role to play, which will change them.

I will improve all of you darkly

The Sergeant, a genetically bred soldier, works for the General, a military genius, to make a team which can cross over the information barrier to find a box in wildcard's world.

The Benefactor, a superpowerful corporate mastermind, and the Mechanic, the B's field agent, work sometimes with, and sometimes against, the General.

Three other manufactured entities are created after wildcard, but they do not have the power he has from his time in isolation. Juniper, a power holding entity, destroyed early by the General, :3:, a mathematical supergenius who does not use language, and Dartagnan, who manipulates individual lives out of curiousity.

Various other characters: Karl, the main, who is the only one capable of making the transition into wildspace. Martha, who loves Karl and tries to protect him. Used by the Benefactor for a very unusual purpose. RJ Sublime, genetically bred for luck.

In the end, wildcard puts them in a timestorm and the Sergeant's formidable battle skills are brought to a bizarre test: he must give a ceaserean section during the battle. He faces an impossible moral dilemma and finds a unique solution.
