A MISTAKE

„It‘s all a big mistake. You‘ve got the wrong person!”
That was all I could shout in the second I’ve been taken by surprise. Two strong hands grabbed my hands and took me to a big black car standing nearby. All the birds I was feeding had flown away, the park was completely empty now. Hadn’t anybody seen my sudden kidnapping?
I was sitting in the car, looking from the window, observing the men. I could properly see only the one who had been holding me, the other was busy driving. Was there anything extraordinary about him? I can’t remember. He could have been my or your neighbour. I looked at the car. It was that kind of an ordinary one you could see on roads every day. Boring colour, old seatbelts, probably no airbags…I didn’t like sitting in cars without airbags since the accident in February last year…
“Where are we going?” I dared to ask after a few minutes of silence.
“Shut up, Joe, you know!”
Oh God, what have I done? I didn’t understand a bit what was happening. Why did they take me? I have never seen them. What are they going to do with me? Now, when I finally sorted out my life, met Julie and is starting a new job?
The idea of Julie made me almost cry. My sweet girl. My last chance. I knew about her wealthy father I must admit but I do like her. She is so innocent and nice. And her cadillac…
Our car turned to a cul-de-sac road and stopped. They hold on me tight and I was lead to a big wooden houseware. It was empty. Only upstairs I could see a beam of light. There was a small office. It was where we were going. I was sure any time a demolition party could come to take this building down. Will the stairs hold me?
I swallowed hard. The big fat man opposite me didn’t look friendly at all. I was pushed onto a chair.
“Joe, how are you?” asked the man.
“I am not Joe.”
“Well, well, you might have forgotten me, it’s been some years. But I doubt it. “
“I don’t know what you are talking about. I am not Joe and I have never seen you!”
I stood up and wanted to leave, tired of this game.
“Sit down!” the other man from the car had an unbelievable power although he was much smaller than I was. I looked at his muscles. Shall I ask him for the address of his gym?
“What do you want from me?”
“Come on, Joe, it’s time to finish…“
“I am not Joe! If you are speaking about my twin brother, well, I met him a few months ago. But I really don’t know where he is.”
“Your twin what?” the man started to laugh. ” A good attempt but I know Joe has no brother. You are Joe and I want my money now!”
This is starting to be serious, I thought. And dangerous. And now what?
Suddenly the ordinary muscular man stepped closer.
“Hey, chief, he really looks a bit different. If he is Joe, let me have a look at his belly. He should have a mark after my knife cut 5 years ago.” He put his hands on the waist. Only now I could see the long dangerously-looking knife. The sweat started running down my face.
The boss nodded.
Oh no! That’s the end now. There is nothing I can do.
I started to take my jacket and T-shirt off, slowly, no time to rush. Then after what I think were long minutes I showed them my belly.
They all stared at it for a long moment. The knife and other possible weapons I had not seen remained in their places.
Now I could smile. I knew the plastic surgery operation last year would be useful. But God, it was terribly expensive!
