We played there in the sun
coming late with watermelon and beer
to sit on the slick yellow rocks
and let the water rush over our feet
caressing and warm beneath the high sand banks
that hid us from the road.
We laughed with younger voices then
Phillip's legs so short that he
could barely struggle up the slippery
rope behind the sun warm waterfall.
Just after nine we started back.
The sun went down too soon
for stars to light the trail
up the still warm sand, and so
we struggled through the dark
and tried to hold each other with
our eyes
and laughter.
Untill we were again
in the real world
on top
singing and laughing, on our way home.
