Deals with race and cultural conflict
My voice is my own
Origins unknown

My voice doesn’t have a color
But it’s been designated as other
A term the world has found
To define black, red, yellow, brown

My voice evidently holds the key
To whatever they keep from me
They say speak from the nasal
Tint my deep brown eyes hazel

My voice is my own
Origins unknown

My voice guides my steps
To places they allow and let
Me to pretend I am kept
Until the promises misstep

My voice searches for the sound
Of my family in me
Crying out so harsh and loud
That I internally bleed

My voice is my own
Origins unknown

My voice silently walks
Through the caverns of my soul
Singing soothing blues and jazz
Intent on making me whole

My voice stealthily creeps
Through the jagged edges of my heart
Caressing salve in the places
Torn and ripped apart

My voice is my own
Origins unknown

Though my voice is ignored
It cannot be stored
In a place it cannot escape
It will not be erased

My voice will one day soar
Telling stories of pain it bore
Walking through closed doors
Silent never more

My voice is my own
Origins unknown
