Excerpt from An Empty Headstone
Nina walked naked from her bedroom, across the living room and into the bathroom, something she could never do any other time. The music was loud enough that she could shut the door and still hear it. The air was thick with steam and the smell of sweet strawberries. Nina laid a towel on the pink and white colored tile floor and slowly, body part by body part, submerged herself into the water. The only sound was the hiss of a million tiny bubbles popping, and Gladys bellowing soulfully from the other room.
“I don’t care what’s right or wrong, and I won’t try to understand.
Let the devil take tomorrow, ‘cause tonight I need a friend.”
Nina smiled and hummed along. Nothing mattered at that moment. No one was looking for her. There were no tables waiting for their plate. No crazy dreams that were in desperate need of interpreting. Nothing. The only focus was Nina’s body and its ultimate comfort. She let herself sink under the water and felt her hips trying to float. She took a cleansing breath and watched the candles flicker on the back of the toilet.
The whine of a door hinge cut through the silence like a jagged hunting knife through flesh. It was the front door. Or was it her imagination? James wasn’t supposed to be back until later that evening. Nina didn’t panic, she just listened. When she saw the bathroom door move, however, she sat straight up.
“Can I come in?” It was Vivica.
“Well, shit, you’re already in. What are you doing in my house?”
“You left you’re key in the door, retard. Just be glad it was me and not a serial killer.”
