experiences with Hannah and Janie
Hannah's first joke was a good one.

It humbled any ideas I may have had about intellectual superiority of adults over kids.

My son, Joe, was saying that he couldn't get Hannah to pronounce the word 'tomatoe.' She could say a few new words quite clearly, like 'apple,' and I was sure I could teach her to say 'tomatoe.'

I held a freshly picked tomatoe that Joe had handed me and said,"Look, Hannah, say the name of this tomatoe from Daddy's garden."

I repeated slowly," Toah...Mayee..Toah...-

Toah...Mayee...Toah..."

Hannah repeated each sylible slowly clearly as I pronounced them.

I then said, " Now say 'tomatoe',all together."

She looked up at me with a grin and sayed,"apple!"
Then she toddled away.
