This was inspired from a magazine story about rescuers who saw a pipe sticking through a roof and finding a man dead in his attic and his barking dog at his side in New orleans Standing by his Master by Katrina Hohner Barking at the Moon the dog stands by his master carried to the attic water rising ever faster. look on his face what does it mean comforting pat on his side can't hide this danger unseen. Can't breath, pound a pipe through the roof broken his master falls to the floor Moonlight pushes back the darkness He can't take much more. Racing across the attic to lick his master's face. Trying to encourage him in this aweful place Looking through the hole Stars twinkle against the black sky Unable to understand why nothings the same Master looks to his dog and also wonders why Laying down listening to his heartbeat comforting music from inside his master finally fading away the dog's beats faster. Barking, Barking footsteps above Roof breaks open the strangers come in Shaking their heads they walk away Barking, barking know's this is the end. Stranger holds his hand out to the dog. but he stands by his master still Bark, bark, help my master or go away. Standing by his master nothing breaks his will Strangers go back to the boat Barking fades away A slient tear falling down A dog stood by his master today. |
