Dog and his Master trying to get away from flood in an attic

This was inspired from a magazine story about rescuers who saw a pipe sticking through a roof and finding a man dead in his attic and his barking dog at his side in New orleans

Standing by his Master
by Katrina Hohner

Barking at the Moon
the dog stands by his master
carried to the attic
water rising ever faster.

look on his face
what does it mean
comforting pat on his side
can't hide this danger unseen.

Can't breath, pound a pipe through the roof
broken his master falls to the floor
Moonlight pushes back the darkness
He can't take much more.

Racing across the attic
to lick his master's face.
Trying to encourage him
in this aweful place

Looking through the hole
Stars twinkle against the black sky
Unable to understand why nothings the same
Master looks to his dog and also wonders why

Laying down listening to his heartbeat
comforting music from inside his master
finally fading away
the dog's beats faster.

Barking, Barking footsteps above
Roof breaks open the strangers come in
Shaking their heads they walk away
Barking, barking know's this is the end.

Stranger holds his hand out to the dog.
but he stands by his master still
Bark, bark, help my master or go away.
Standing by his master nothing breaks his will

Strangers go back to the boat
Barking fades away
A slient tear falling down
A dog stood by his master today.
