My inner elf

My Inner Elf.
I declare the next two weeks (or so) to be
"Be Nice to Yourelf" time!
Not 'yourSelf' - but yourelf!

So, after Hubby's stroke late spring, he's decided that the time has come for a full-on family photo. It is what he wants for Christmas. The whole family. Both sides of the whole. His. Mine. Ours.

The call went out last summer and everyone, every single one of them is coming. My brother from Boston. My son from Colorado. Others (who work evert Christmas) took the afternoon off. Six for Christmas morning, seventeen (and counting) for dinner and twenty-seven in all for the photo. I will have bodies everywhere! We have a two-bedroom house! There will be bodies on couches, the floor, and who-knows-all-where! My table seats eight squished. It will be interesting. I'm cooking a ham and a turkey. (The day before!) The time-frame of the day is condensing in front of my eyes.

It'll HAVE to run like clockwork or it'll be a disaster. Not even Christmas yet and I found myself in total spazz. People will be eating dinner cross-legged on the floor. Buffet style. Do I have enough plates and silverware? Um, not sure. Plates? Um, maybe. It will be different from normal, that's a given. No beautifully laid table, candles. Doubt we can get seventeen people from teens to 70s all quiet at the same time. More traditions chucked out the window for the squirrels. Will I even have time to talk to everybody? Probably not.

But .. but ...I do not want Christmas all rushed together. It passes by so quickly as it is. If I blink, I'll miss it. *Pouts. Spazzes*

<break for dinner>

Got to love a good brainstorming session. Figured it all out - mostly! Hubby wants to write (!!!) a little something to say before dinner. He says he has a big mouth and will put it to good use to get everyone quiet. We changed the picture time and now it should work. As I mentioned earlier, we are cooking most of the food the day before so everything just needs warming up while we are doing the family portrait thing. Then, he says, feeding (unknowingly) into what I was writing, that before the craziness ensues, that I should take some 'me' time because he knows (and gets) how important the day is to me. He also liked that with the revamped schedule we will not be so rushed. Then he asked, somewhat sheepishly, if after dinner and pictures etc., if then he could play with the 'toys' he knows he's getting for Christmas. He makes my heart smile.

He's right, tho. At this time of year, one needs to feed that inner elf. It needs attention too. No matter the holiday, there needs to be that bit of magic. We all need some aspect of the goofy, cheesy, heart-warming holiday movies. I know I do.

So take time for yourelf. Take a deep breath. And then another. Remember the unique moments, the silly happenstances, the wet-eyed 'happy tears' reactions and the family that gathers 'round. Blood or not, the family one has, that indomitable circle along with faith in tomorrow and each other is what it is all about.

Huh. He just bopped in here saying he saw a "commercial for something called a 'bath bomb special' - some fizzy thing to throw in the tub along with a candle and is that something you'd like?" Hmmm. *Innerelf started jumping up and down squealing* Yes, yes I would.

Got myself a new journal today as well. Need to record the moments - with or without spazz.
