Oceans

From Moby Dick, the Old Man and the Sea, to Castaway ... the oceans have given authors the perfect backdrops for books and stories filled with action and adventure on the water. Or, in the case of Castaway, surrounded by ocean water.

Oceans, close to the shore, give us a myriad of beach themed stories from an eventful Hawaiian vacation to surfing during hurricanes. Deep water is full of secrets, many of them maybe never to be uncovered. No matter how many submarines and diving machines we built, we will never be able to truly partake in the great vast oceans. We humans will always be visitors. Out of our element. In need of technology or magic to make water habitable for us.

As you can see in the Editor's Choices highlighted below, even authors here on Writing.Com have come up a vast number of water and ocean-themed stories and poems.

From swashbuckling pirates, to explorers, to those seeking adventure on the open water - we can write about all of those and use water as the perfect medium to carry our story.

Ask & Answer

I received the following replies to my last Action/Adventure newsletter "Bow and ArrowOpen in new Window.:

Mastiff Author Icon wrote: If anyone is into the old style fighting and apocalyptic science fiction, I recommend the Emberverse series by S.E. Stirling. I'm on the last if the 15 book series!

Great recommendation. To anyone considering to buy: remember to click through from Writing.Com so that our gracious site hosts can get a little percentage back. It won't make the book more expensive for you.

Monty Author Icon wrote: Thanks for adding the word notch and when you loose that arrow you may lose it.

*Laugh* Well observed.

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: There is a quote in the Bible that refers to a "quiver full" meaning lots of kids. My mother had 6 and said her "quiver" was full.

I believe that. I bet growing up in such a large family, you always had lots of action and maybe even some adventures.
