Welcome to this week's edition of the Action/Adventure Newsletter. For this edition I have chosen a rather unlikely topic: biographies...

Letter from the editor

Sometimes I love to curl up with a biography. I've always been fascinated with the French Revolution, for example, and with Napoleon's reign. Records of that period in time may not be 100 percent accurate, of course. And when spinning a tale that will keep the reader interested and feel involved with the characters, some fiction tends to be needed. But there are a couple of books I have read and reread, based on letters exchanged between the characters and their loves, families and other people they were close to, as well as more commonly known historical facts.

Hold on, what does all this have to do with action and adventure? Everything!

"Desiree" by Annemarie Selinko is a book about Napoleon's first love. It follows the main character, Desiree, from how she met Napoleon, to becoming his fiancée, to following him to Paris only to hear him announce his upcoming wedding with Josephine and, ultimately, to how she became the Queen of Sweden.

The whole book is one big adventure with an unlikely heroine and the details of Napoleon's campaigns add a bit of action along the way. It's all the more intriguing because it is based on true events.

Another book I love is "The Queen's Confession" by Victoria Holt. Set before Napoleon's empire, it tells us the story of Marie Antoinette, from her journey to France to her final moments in the waiting room...

Adventure? You bet! The book is set against a background of unrest, which eventually leads to the French Revolution. There's a mysterious necklace, intrigue, a touch of magic and witchcraft and so much more. The addition of the letter exchanges adds to the feel of this novel.

If you enjoy a more modern setting, I'd like to make a rather unlikely suggestion: “Feel” by Chris Heath. The author of this novel spent about two years with the British singer Robbie Williams and Rob is actually mentioned as the co-author.

Although this book made me feel incredibly frustrated at times and actually managed to make me like Rob Williams a lot less than before (which I think was not quite the author's purpose), it takes the reader on a journey through modern day celebrity and the madness that surrounds it, which, trust me, is an adventure in itself.

Biographies can make for a great read. I also think they can inspire a writer and offer fresh ideas – as so often mentioned, real life is such an excellent source of inspiration. Life can throw obstacles in our path and take us on journeys not even our creative minds could have come up with...
