Letter from the editor

I have self-published two books, and two more will be available on Amazon by next Christmas. I am so proud. My dream of being a published author has come true. Self-publishing was the best thing I could have ever done for my writing career. There are things I can't accomplish by self-publishing, though. Let's take a look at the reasons to self-publish and what doors remain closed when you do.

Self-publishing is easy. Once you learn how to navigate Amazon the process is simple. You can easily upload the PDF of your manuscript onto their site in just a few minutes. They even offer a tool you can use to create your book cover. Everything you need is, literally, at your fingertips.

You have complete creative control. There is no publisher or agent to tell you to do re-write after re-write to make your book up to their standards. The only thing that matters is what you want to put into your book.

You can plan your publicity campaign on your own. I am promoting my books mostly on Social Media, and I am planning a website for the same purpose. Book tours, a lot of travel specifically, are not really convenient for me. Because I self-published I have complete control over what procedure I use to promote my own books.

Publishing on Amazon is free. With the book cover tool included, self-publishing can be free or as low cost as you want.

Now for the draw backs.

You do have to do everything yourself. Unless you have the money to get a publicist or person like that, you have to take the time from your writing to promote. That doesn't have to be hard, but it can be time consuming. You have to identify your target audience and get and plan your speaking engagements, if you want to include that in your promotion plan.

There is one, last thing that self-publishing makes harder-getting into brick-and-mortar stores. I am surrounded by Coles, Chapters and many fine used book stores. All of these desirable stores have, basically, told me to get a reputable publisher. Then, they will consider carrying my books on their shelves. This is just my experience, though. There are authors I know of that have been offered deals with brick-and-mortar stores. The opportunities are out there, just lessened for many self-published authors.

I am completely comfortable with my decision to self-publish. It is giving me everything I need. I am confident I find my own following.

Take a look and see if it suits your needs.
