Letter from the editor

April is a month of rain and wind and also beautiful weather. It is also a month to look at the quality of the contests that are presented on writing.com. What makes a good contest? Many think it is the prizes that are awarded by each contest. But I personally think that it is the quality of the entries to the various contests. Whether it be a Poetry contest, short story contest, or a combination of the two or even a short fiction contest. It is the quality of the entries. The stories must be interesting, The poems must be flamboyant, and the prompts must also be rare and different. Whether the contest has a prompt or not the subject matter should be different and imaginative. My personal preference is to have a prompt free contest as it gives the writer much more lee way to write an imaginative and honest piece of writing.

There are many different types of contests on writing.com. For example there are contests that are only for prompts, where you create a prompt and that is the contest. There are also contests where you enter each night a piece of short fiction, it is a nightly contest. A contest for poetry, short stories and a combination of the two. There are the contests such as where a review can get cash, a picture prompt is used or a contest for only Haiku poetry or for comedy poetry, many people on writing.com create an enormous amount of creative contests. It is up to you to join in and enter these contests, you can win wonderful prizes such as merit badges, award icons, and gift points. You are the one that keeps these contests running, without you there will be no contests.

Reviews are also a good idea for contests to win cash.
The site itself runs many contests that gives enormous prizes. They are sanctioned by the site and all members of writing.com are able to enter.
