Letter from the editor

I was going to write about trust in this week’s Spiritual newsletter. Yesterday’s events in Paris, however, led to some reflection about what places mean to us.

I don’t know about you, but I felt sad seeing the Notre-Dame cathedral on fire. The sadness wasn’t just because the Notre-Dame is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, but because of the history of the place. Construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century. For over 800 years the building has been a part of Paris and it is, arguably, one of the best-known and loved structures in the world.

Seeing the responses to the fire, hearing the songs of the Parisians, it made me wonder for how many people the Notre-Dame is a part of their story. I am not a Catholic, but it certainly is a part of mine...

I remember first seeing the cathedral in person. The windows. The gargoyles. It truly is beautiful. Having always had an interest in the Napoleonic era, walking down the aisle where he and all those other historical figures once walked (Napoleon’s coronation took place in the Notre-Dame, in 1804) gave me a sense of wonder, a realisation of the historic ties that bind all of humanity. I have many memories of Paris; visits with my mom, for example. And I am just one of many, many people globally who have created such memories, and all these stories – all our stories - are woven into the story of the city, of the Notre-Dame, and that is pretty special.

When such a place, then, is damaged, it can be emotional. It’s an emotion that at first seems strange, as it’s not like a place is alive, but it’s understandable. All of a sudden part of our story, part of what has been there all our lives, reliably, is gone.

Or not completely gone, thankfully. It looked very bad yesterday, but today things are more positive. Already, a lot of money has been pledged to the cathedral’s restoration – surely a sign of its status in our hearts – and in time the Notre-Dame will be the heart of Paris once more.

It won’t be the exact same. But then, neither are we. As we live, we love and lose and learn. We evolve. We can cherish our memories, but be open to building new ones. And 800 years from now, there will be people in Paris creating their own stories, never knowing ours, but becoming a part of the cathedral’s lasting, interwoven tale.
