About This Newsletter

Hi, I'm Sophurky Author Icon ~ your editor for this edition of the Spiritual Newsletter.

The Rev. Scotty McLennan, author of the book Finding Your Religion, compares humanity's innate need for spiritual searching to climbing a mountain. In his view, we are all endeavoring to climb the same figurative mountain in our search for the divine, we just may take different ways to get there. In other words, there is one "God," but many paths. I honor whatever path or paths you have chosen to climb that mountain in your quest for the Sacred.

Creative Writing Exercise

Last year while on a women's spirituality retreat, we did a writing exercise led by my friend Katya the Poet Author Icon that resulted in a new poem I wrote at the retreat. It seemed a great exercise to share with all of you as we begin National Poetry Month. (These directions are taken from my notes, and may not be exactly as shared by Katya - but they should be close enough for you to end up with a nice new poem!)

She asked us to write down responses to several statements - she read each statement out loud, one at a time, and the gave us a few moments to jot down some notes about what popped into our head during a time of silence.

Here are my notes ...

A thing I love
*BulletV* My comfy bed
*BulletV* My family
*BulletV* My home

A lost object from the past
*BulletV* The first lost object that occurs to me is sleep, as I didn't sleep well last night. I don't sleep well when I am away from my own bed - which I love - so I lose sleep when away from home, especially on these retreats, where the beds are not at all comfy.
*BulletV* Lost diamonds also occur to me -
Diamond earrings
Diamond from my engagement ring
Diamond from my mom’s ring
Lots of lost diamonds here - may be a whole other poem? I worry their value may be diminished in the eyes of the giver due to my carelessness of losing them – I tell them “they aren’t lost, I just don’t know where they are” as if someday I may find them again.
The diamonds are gone – but the love from which they came remains.

An object gifted to me
*BulletV* Diamond earrings for my 40th birthday (the same ones I lost)
*BulletV* A glass dolphin

A wondrous object (in nature)
*BulletV* The Virgin River in Zion National Park
*BulletV* A sea turtle in Maui
*BulletV* My sweet Labrador - Daisy
Daisy loves me this I know, for her happy face tells me so
It is wondrous how she loves me – without question or condition
She is a wondrous object of love and devotion from and to me
Pure love – deep abiding healing love
Peace

Then she invited us to write a poem inspired by the notes we jotted down, looking for connections or a flow among them. I chose to write about these things from my notes:

Things I love - My bed
Lost things – sleep
A wondrous object – Daisy

Though I also may do something later with the diamonds ....

Anyway, here is the poem I wrote at our retreat.

Ask & Answer

Here is a response to my last newsletter "Spiritual Newsletter (March 6, 2019)Open in new Window. about a "Lenten Journey:"

From queenkissy
One year I gave up coffee for Lent. It didn't work so well.

Now that would be tough!

I would like to make a point that not all Christians follow lent which came from Jewish traditions. I'm very happy with knowing Christ is in my life, my sins are forgiven, and I only need follow Him.

To each their own. *Smile*

What will make your journey for these next forty days a sacred one? What do you need to leave behind? Is there someone you need to forgive to be free? Is there some habit or activity or relationship that has come to demand too much of your time and attention? What do you need to take with you? Is there some issue or relationship or activity that you need to pay more attention to regain perspective? This passage was so good. I don't do Lent, but in honor of the season and a coworker I've decided to try to make a sacrifice. King David once said neither will I offer burnt offerings which cost me nothing He was offered a threshold for free but insisted he pay for it. We all know the sweetest rewards are the ones we make great sacrifices for. So I will fast and pray each Monday, drinking only water and coffee from the time I get up til I go to bed. Pray for me that I will make it.

I hope your Lenten journey is an blessed experience.
