About This Newsletter

Hi, I'm JACE Author Icon.

Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.

Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings. *Smile*

Letter from the editor

If you’re reading these words, you’ve taken that first, most important step--you signed up for a membership on Writing.Com.

That’s the easy part. Most likely you have a free membership. WDC statistics state that less than 2% of members initially join with paid memberships. In fact, paid memberships currently account for fewer than 1.25% of all active members. How many active members are there? More than three-quarters of a million souls.

I began with a free membership in May 2008. It took less than three weeks to realize I wanted (and needed) more features to achieve the goals I’d set for myself. You may be facing that decision as well.

A discussion of all the features and benefits that paid membership levels offer is beyond the scope of this newsletter. I do plan to touch on many of these features in subsequent newsletters. I will, however, limit myself to one potentially lucrative and very rewarding benefit that a paid membership offers.

Only a paid member may submit an entry to any of the official WDC monthly contests.

Currently there are five official monthly contests: Short Shots, What a Character!, Journey Through Genres, Quotation Inspiration, and Rhythms and Writing … and one official contest that occurs only once a year—Dear Me.

Appropriately, Dear Me is always the first contest of each year. The new year is a time when one usually thinks of New Year’s resolutions. Dear Me provides the means for an introspective look at one’s potential and possible writing path for the coming year and the ability to codify it by writing a letter to yourself.

BUT, you can only enter if you have a paid membership. Any level membership for any length of time suffices. The membership must, however, be valid during the contest dates and the subsequent judging period.

Even if you join only to participate in this Dear Me contest, I’m convinced you’ll find many reasons to continue your paid membership. Or, even upgrade! I’ve been a Premium member since my first upgrade, often paying for it with gift points earned by reviewing and by participating in contests, both official and member-run.

Dear Me is the perfect way to begin your 2019 writing year. Chart your path, seize your destiny, and fulfill your writing goals. Write them down in a letter to yourself. After all, you wouldn’t lie to yourself, would you? Then submit that letter to the contest committee.
At the very least you’ll codify your writing desires enabling you to achieve success in all your writing endeavors.

Write on!
