About This Newsletter

Sometimes asking someone if they are okay can make a big difference. We all need to feel cared about. Even if we have just one person on our side, it makes us stronger.

This week's Spiritual Newsletter is all about being there for others, and accepting that others want to be there for us.

Letter from the editor

I just finished watching a very good South-Korean series called Who Are You: School 2015. Unlike the South-Korean series I’ve watched previously, this one is pretty dark. Sometimes it was tough viewing. It sure did make me think...

The series is about a girl growing up in an orphanage. At school, she is the victim of horrific bullying. At the same time, we get introduced to another girl, at another school, who very much looks like her, but she’s got a loving mother, and she’s got friends. Still, all’s not well with her, either.

The bullying of the first girl reaches terrible proportions. The second girl goes on a school trip and goes missing. Days later, a girl wakes up in the hospital, but she cannot remember anything, including who she is.

Who Are You covers more than just bullying. It covers past regrets, the importance of receiving love from your family. The importance of standing up for what’s right. Above all, it shows the importance of someone reaching out to you, asking you if you’re okay... someone who is there for you. Whether that’s a parent, a friend or a teacher, if you have at least one person on your side, it’s a lot easier to find the strength to carry on.

I know that many of you who are reading this newsletter have faith in a higher power. This faith can bring comfort during dark and difficult times. Sometimes faith is all a person has to pull them through. I know that when I pray, it does offer me comfort.

Still... we are human beings. The importance of having at least one other person in our life who accepts us and cares about us is not to be underestimated. It isn’t always easy to reach out for help. Many of us don’t want to be a burden. We need to remember that sharing helps lift the load, and that those who care want to be there, want to help, just as we’d be there for them if they needed us in turn.

I’m speaking here from the position of someone who has a tendency to hide in my shell. There are times when I’m far too elusive. My family and friends can go weeks without hearing from me, because sometimes I don’t even know what’s going on with me, and I need to gather my thoughts, and recharge my batteries. Then I feel guilty for being quiet for all that time – again – and it's difficult to need to make that right – again – and that can prolong my silence, until finally I realise I’m being silly. Those who know me know what I am like. They’re not going to be angry with me. They’ll want to know what’s going on with me, and I want to know what’s going on with them. Those who can’t deal with my elusive periods have given up long ago (I can’t blame them, really).

I’m not exactly happy during my silences. Whilst I need them, I also need human contact, even if it’s online, or over the phone. There is value in the human connection. In being able to pick up that phone and call someone who cares about me when I need to talk. To know that if the other person needs to talk, they’ll ring me, too. I’m slowly building some new friendships offline, with people who are much like me. So far, they get me, and I get them, and it’s nice. I may have the occasional dream of living in the middle of nowhere, away from anyone and everyone, but when I get right down to it, I don’t believe that that would be a happy or healthy existence – at least, not for me.

If you are anything like me, please reach out when you need to. And if someone reaches out to you, and you’re in a position to help, please do so. We live in a world where we’re increasingly distracted by our screens, and contact can be fleeting – a selfie, a food pic, a tweet, and we’re on to the next, and the next, and the next... but there are real people behind those expressions. People with feelings, and emotions, and worries, and we have the power to make them smile.

Sometimes, all that’s needed is to ask someone if they’re okay. Sometimes, they will give you a genuine answer. That matters.
