You Want them Together

When you've got two people with sizzling chemistry, but they're not becoming a couple.

How many times have you read a book or watched a TV show and there are two people in it who would make a perfect couple. They work together or have some other connection that forces them to be in each other's presence on a regular basis. They have feelings for one another, but haven't admitted them to one another, maybe not even to themselves.

As a reader, you can see the sizzle through their interactions. You follow along chapter after chapter, hoping they will finally get together. But they shouldn't get together. Why? Because that would end the story. The whole dynamic of the story relies on these two to never get each other. The tension in anything they do is stronger because of this bond they have that we want to see fulfilled.

Usually, when the couple ends up forming, it has a tendency to destroy the original feel. New expectations come into play, at least in some reader's minds. If you are going to write that drawn out romance and you have the couple end up with each other in the end, be aware that this is most likely your "happy ending." Your story is now finished. Make sure everything else you wanted to accomplish with your story has come full circle.

This scenario lends itself best to very long stories or novels, it's not really useful in flash fiction writing.

Ask & Answer

For my last Romance / Love newsletter "Mistletoe Works!Open in new Window., I received the following replies:

StephBee Author Icon wrote: What a heartwarming story about the power of mistletoe. Congrats to you and Ranger Ernie. There are some great hikes here in SoCal. Enjoy!

Yes, it was truly heartwarming to witness this romance develop.

ladeecaid wrote: I know this is super late, but I wanted to thank you for sharing the story of Ernie and the mistletoe.
I live in the northern part of the U.S. and haven't seen mistletoe growing up here even though Google tells me it does. However, when I'd gone to the upper part of Florida, I saw it clustered in the tops of some trees. I thought it strange that I'd have to go to a warmer climate to see something so prominent in one of the coldest months of the year.

I've never investigated when mistletoe grows. I agree that it's strange that it would be a warm weather plant if it's so prominent in Christmas decorations.

2. Does Ranger Ernie have a brother? *Laugh*

Ernie has a brother. His name is not Bert. I also don't think he's married. Come on over. *Wink*

willwilcox wrote: I lived in Hollywood for 12 years and visited Griffin Park often: the Observatory, the Greek theater. I saw some great concerts there: Rufus, Brothers Johnson, Frankie Beverly & Maze to name a few. I never met Ranger Ernie, but I did meet his brother, Bert.

*Laugh* Good one. Ernie's brother is not Bert. But it's true that he has a brother.
