Letter from the editor

Although change is a normal part of life, people often fear change. We feel comfortable with routine, and any departure from routine can be seen as a threat. Because we fear change, it is an important part of many horror stories. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, and shapeshifters are all horror creatures that change. Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are well known changing creatures from classic horror. Here are some examples of fear of change that might drive a horror story:

Fear of death or disease

Fear of aging

Fear of rejection

Fear of being forgotten

In other cases, people who are extremely unhappy with their lives may desire change so fiercely that they will resort to desperate acts. Here are some desires for change that might drive a horror story:

Desire for love

Desire for fame

Desire for money

Desire for power

It is normal to want to prevent negative changes or desire positive ones. However, the results can be horrific if people fail to consider negative consequences. For example, a character who sells his soul to the devil to escape poverty will end up making things much worse for himself.

Something to try: Write a horror story based on fear or desire for change.
