NaPoWriMo is all about not only writing a poem a day, but keeping your muse awake and kicking for thirty days straight! Tis easy to start off in a flurry, using up odd phrases and ideas you've 'saved' up. But just about now, the ideas start to fade out, your days are a bit backlogged, life has reared its ugly head WAY too often and you muse ... well, your muse has threatened to go on strike, wants more ice cream and chocolate and a most well deserved nap or it will only deliver random phone numbers from a dog-eared telephone book from 1973! It's tired of photograph inspirations --especially ones from exotic locales it can't convince you to travel to NOW!
Do get your muse its favored treat and try some of these prompts ( or any part of them) on for size! Perhaps you will find something that just may tickle your muse's fancy! Or not, but it's worth a try for something different!
An old, crumpled, black and white photograph that falls out of an antique book.
A tarnished silver spoon.
Your great-aunt Sophy (that you may or may not have even known you had) dies and leaves you an antique trunk full of ...
The sound of a far off train whistle in the midst of a lonely night.
Finding a twenty dollar bill in the pocket of a jacket you can't even remember the last time you wore it.
Finding an obviously well-loved teddy bear (rag doll, stuffed bunny, flying pig - what ever) on the side of the road.
A 'shoe tree' (Google it!) or the 'story' behind one of the pairs of footwear hanging there.
The butterfly on the windchime.
Take a line from a favorite poem and go off in your own direction. (Giving credit for the line, off course!)
An old man (or woman or veteran or child) and his/her pet panhandling on the edge of a busy intersection
A funeral with only two people present.
Unrelenting Winter (if you haven't already!)
Finding a bottle with a message inside.
Inscense burning (Patchouli, Dragon's Blood, Lemon-Verbina or ...)
Last words.
YOUR eulogy.
Shadows in the Night.
A poem in which you do not use the words: of, to, from, up, down, the, I, me, my.
A form you've never tried - or your favorite form. (Like a sestina or a pantuum.)
Something in the headlines that touches a chord.
The third book from the right on your bookshelf.
The forty-seventh picture on your cell.
The Nothing Box
Tell off that person you've always wanted to to say something to, but couldn't, shouldn't or wouldn't. (No names necessary!)
A ring full of blackened skeleton keys.
There! That should wake up your muse and fuel its soul!
Good luck!!! And, as always, Happy Writing!
