About This Newsletter

Quote for the week: “Books aren’t eggs, you know. Simply because a book has aged a bit doesn’t mean it’s gone bad.”

Letter from the editor

Any book is a mystery before you have opened it, but especially an old book. Besides the story or other content, the book itself has a history. Imagine finding a heavy, leatherbound volume in a dusty old bookshop. No matter the title or the subject, you can't resist opening it, can you?

What do you find on the yellowed pages within? Here are some possibilities:

A rare first edition of a well known novel.

A forgotten, but brilliant tale penned by a writer who died without ever knowing fame.

Poetry that seems to carry a message deeper than the rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration.

An old textbook with notes in the margins written by previous students.

A scientific notebook containing detailed plans for an odd, or wonderful invention that was never created.

An artist's sketchbook.

A map.

A diary containing a famous (or infamous) person's secrets.

Interesting stains or markings. Could those be tears? Could that one be blood?

Something to try: Write a mystery story that includes a mysterious old book.
