Oh The Irony

In looking for newsletter topics, I often look at the National Days site. Usually it gives me a good laugh, especially when a day is chosen for more than one celebration. This month, February 14 has some obvious celebrations, like Valentine's Day, and National Cream Filled Chocolates Day. The irony is Feb. 14 is also National Ferris Wheel Day, so don't have too many of those chocolates. It's also Organ Donor day, so make sure your ferris wheel is safe!

Friday is Do A Grouch a Favor Day, which was a great reminder for me to mention reviewing. While we all appreciate constuctive criticism, we have to remember that in the long run, reviews are opinion. We can take the technical advice and improve our structure and content, that's helpful. Some reviewers like to give feedback on how a story made them feel. That's certainly something you want to look at. Did your extraneous characters stay in the background or did they try to jump into the limelight? Did the reader feel the emotions you intended them to feel?

Sometimes readers forget that the narrator of the story isn't always the author. If a reader sends a review saying 'sorry this happened to you', or assaults your story because it triggered them, remember that you did your job, you made the reader relate to the story. Sometimes a short response to the review with an explanation can help clear things up. As reviewers, we can remember to impart as much helpful information as we can without trying to change the author's basic story and voice.

In the end, remember reviews are impressions and opinion and as the author, you have the final decisions on what to change or try to improve.

This month's question: If you had a reviewer confuse narrator/author, how did you respond?

Excerpt: "It was a thing of beauty. Sleek and yet bold, the cruiser bore its scars proudly. It boasted pock-marks earned from micro-meteor storms that had overcome even the best shielding in its class; they whispered of its pedigree in deep space exploration. A blackened and bulging vent near the aft spoke of its heroism against the most deadly pirates of the coreward rift. In that moment, it was mine: the finest little ship in the cluster. Oh, the adventures that awaited me, when I was young! For your ear and a Tilaxian brandy, I'll gladly share them all. Lean close, my friend." I'd collected a strange menagerie of space adventurer's to my table. I checked my empty pockets coming up with only an Icanian token chip kept for good luck. An empty tankard was set before me. I waited breathless with anticipation for it to be filled.

Excerpt: "Tick, tick, tick..." The clock would not stop making that sound. My god, just shut up! It just keeps ticking. The school day was almost over. Usually that was pretty good. But today is special, today, the chosen one is going to be revealed to the world! I have looked at a bunch of movies. Usually the nerd who gets bullied is the chosen one! He's smart and has no friends. He has a crush on the most popular girl in school. I fit the mold! I am the perfect chosen one. The bottom of the social caste at school.

Excerpt: "Welcome, Bill."

"The name's James, so why is everyone calling me Bill and claiming to know me?Stop staring at me"

The doctor noted James's face redden and eyes bulge.

"Okay, Bill er James tell me what happened when you got to the English Channel in 2012."

"An old man, with a long beard, tapped his staff on the shore, and the sea parted before the illegals."

Excerpt: Until the accident. Monika winced as pictures of the mysterious explosion that had all but leveled the lab ran through her mind. She’d barely managed to save her father and herself.

Excerpt: "I think skeptic is not an accurate description. I regard myself as having a strictly scientific perspective on things. Everything has a rational mechanism, it's just that some things, indeed many things, remain unexplained." He placed his cup decisively on the tablecloth. "Perhaps you can fill me in with the plan?" he asked the woman closest to him, sitting with the folds of her long, white dress draped over the corner of her chair.

Last month's question: What do you do with your 'nothing time'?

Howler of the Moon Author Icon responded:During my "nothing time", I usually browse YouTube or DeviantART. However, there are times where I see a character with an interesting design and think, "I could use something like that in a story." Then I either scribble ideas or create an image collage on Google Drive.

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon said: Think of ideas.

Thanks for the feedback, your answers are much appreciated.
