Find What You Love

There is a quote I ran across recently and its origin isn't clear. When I saw it, the person who shared it labeled it as a quote by Charles Bukowski, but there isn't definitive proof that he said it. One article states that the American composer Van Dyke Parks stated it in an interview, quoting his friend, Kinky Friedman. What's the quote?

You've got to find what you love and let it kill you.

A bit morbid, but I find some truth in it. None of us are guaranteed any amount of time on Earth, so why waste it doing things you don't love? Sure, we all have obligations and responsibilities, and you can't always do what you love, but I think it's good advice.

Writing is often a labor of love, that is a task done for pleasure rather than reward. I started writing plays and short stories when I was pretty young. I remember giving myself homework during Summers in elementary/primary school. *Laugh* I wrote for the enjoyment of it, and I think most writers do. We write because we feel compelled to. It brings us pleasure!

So remember that the next time you're struggling with writer's block or didn't win a contest or publication you were seeking. It's important to learn from failures, but I think it's equally important to find the enjoyment in what you do! For me, editing is the part I don't love, but it's a necessary part of the writing experience. I love having a polished piece of writing, so I endure the less enjoyable part to get to that end goal.

We all know that rejection is part of writing. We also know that every writer has experienced it. It's part of the process and can lead to great things. At times there are things that must be endured to get to the good stuff. *Wink*

As always, keep on writing!

! While this past year, I had so much transition and challenge going on in my "real world" and wasn't around as much as I'd liked to have been, This year will be a different story! Success stories, shared goals and achievements, encouragement and support, and challenges and contests that will inspire all to take an active role in our positive and uplifting group. Again, I thank you for the shout out!
