Exciting Stories

Action-Adventure stories keep us reading with their excitement.

Action-Adventures, by definition, should never be boring. The stories that deserve to be called Action-Adventures should always present some form of danger and give the reader a sense of excitement. Typical Action-Adventure include spy novels, mysteries, adventure stories, and stories that terrorize the characters and intrigue the reader.

That being said, when you read some older books that fall under Action-Adventure, you will find lengthy descriptions of characters or landscapes. There will be pages upon pages, even whole chapters, dedicated to a seemingly unnecessary detail or person. Yet, those books count as world literature to this day and still spawn movies and video games.

One such example is the book series The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski. While the books are full of action, fighting, magic, and adventure, they also include several chapters that could really put off a modern reader for being long-winded and giving a feeling of wasting time. At the same time, this body of work has been used to create the video game by the same name that is considered a fun to play adventure game.

Us modern writers can't get away with such long-winded writing any longer. When you write an Action-Adventure story, you need to keep the reader engaged. While that doesn't mean you can't hold still for a minute to look at the scenery, let your characters eat, or otherwise stop moving for a short time, it's not a good idea for a modern writer to assume the readers will stick it out with you through a several pages long description of an inanimate object when they thought they were reading and Action-Adventure.

Find the balance between keeping the story going with an atmosphere of excitement while filling it with enough detail to be rich and engaging. Tall order. Yup. The best way to find out how to do is reading and then writing as much Action-Adventures as you can.
